When The Light Meets The Floor
When the Light Meets the Floor is the result of my ongoing exploration of the ballroom scene and the radical act of being seen. Over the past motnhs, I’ve been attending balls and spending time with members of the community in Bristol and Cardiff, capturing moments that exist in between performance and presence — the quiet power of showing up, the vulnerability in waiting, and the joy of being witnessed.
Ballroom was born as resistance and celebration within Black, Latinx, queer and trans communities. It’s a space where people construct family, identity, and visibility in response to a world that often erases them. Drawn to that energy, I began documenting the moments when the light hits the floor and everything slows — the walk before the category is called, the breath before the pose, the silence after the beat drops.
In 2025, I started working more closely with individuals from the scene, photographing their gestures, textures, and shared spaces. These images were never staged — instead, I tried to respond to the atmosphere and rhythm of the room, allowing things to unfold. I also began recording conversations, collecting stories about belonging, self-expression, and survival.
Through this project, I hope to honour the ballroom community — not just for what happens in the spotlight, but for the intimacy, care, and resilience that exist behind it.
